The Typography of My Flash Builder

MXML_ColoredCode

Awhile back, I posted about the Typography of my ActionScript. At the time, I had no idea there was real support for changing editor colors in Eclipse. Since the public beta 2 of Flash Builder 4 at announced at MAX, I’m happy to report that this has finally changed! As far as I know, the support is added in Eclipse 3.4,  but don’t hold me to that. I actually stumbled across these settings by accident in the Flash Builder preferences. Right now these options are spread out between the Flash Builder syntax coloring preferences and the default Eclipse editor settings in a few places. It can be kind of confusing, but that’s what I am aiming to help you avoid having to deal with. Read the rest of this entry →

Adobe Community Help Client — AIR to the Rescue!

FlashCatalystHelp
Somehow with iPhones and Flash and CS5 and John Mayer, the release of the Community Help Client was overshadowed. This is way underrated, and a much more significant announcement than it may seem. Many problems people had with CS4 was the fact that the help system was only available online and didn’t open natively inside each app. With CHC, comes what I see as a near-perfect solution. CHC is an AIR app on Adobe Labs that checks for updates based on your preferences and stores your apps’ documentation on your local machine! Read the rest of this entry →

What Would You Want in an Adobe Flash Platform Suite?

wheel-o'-icons_sm

[Ed. Note: I was going to be all cute and try to draw some conceptual box art, but I’ll leave that to someone with more time. :) ]

Well, it’s that time of year again. The time for us all to wager on what we think will be unveiled at MAX. A few people have already weighed in, but the one thing I haven’t seen guessed at yet (probably because the likelihood is low) is the announcement of a Flash Platform Suite. I know I’m not the first person to think of this, but I haven’t seen it committed to paper yet. So I would like to hear the Community’s opinion: Flashers, Flexers, and CFers, what would you want in an Adobe Flash Platform Suite if such a thing(s) were to ever come into existence? Products like Flex Builder, ColdFusion and other Flash Platform applications are all currently sold separately, and we have yet to hear mention of  how Flash Catalyst or ColdFusion Builder will be packaged. This is all in pure fun, of course. We have no idea if any such options will ever become commercially available. So, with that disclaimer out of the way, let’s speculate! Get VIP Seating at Adobe MAX 2009!

Send Suttle to MAX

So, as many of you know, I won 2nd place in Phillip Kerman’s ‘Why Max?’ video contest. That means, I get preferred VIP seating at the MAX Keynotes. However, I don’t have a ticket. I really would like to go though. So, what I’m attempting to do, is come up with a way to give someone the VIP seat, and find a way to go myself. What I want is to go to MAX and get to meet so many of you. However, I am willing to entertain offers for some sort of trade for goods, services, items from my Amazon Wish List, or my ultimate goal (and not-so-secret dream), a full pass to MAX 2009. Of course, I will take whatever I can get, but I’d like to make up for my time and effort at least a little bit. I have never been to any conference this large. In fact, I have only been to one conference. Ever.

Please ping me on Twitter and let’s make a deal. There are only 2 weeks left before MAX 2009, so hurry!

Update: Well this was a massively embarrassing fail. I will, unfortunately, not be attending MAX this year, though I am trying desperately to make it to FlashPitt and RIAUnleashed. However, the bright-side is that I have decided to give my VIP seating to somebody who really deserves it. I’ll update soon on who that is.

SUPER AWESOMETASTIC UPDATE: As it turns out, I won a 2nd contest of Phillip’s! This time the prize was a ticket to FlashPitt! Gigantic thanks again to Phillip Kerman, Robert Hall, Flash Camp Philly, and my cat-like Twitter reflexes.

ULTRA FULL OF WIN UPDATE: I have decided to give my VIP seating privileges to my new friend, and Flash limit-bender Sean McCracken, aka “Seantron”, a stud developer for Influxis. People like Sean who further the community deserve to be recognized and rewarded. I’m just trying to do my part in making that happen. Here’s to you, Sean! Enjoy your time at MAX 2009!
